| | All authors must adhere to the following guidelines, which are provided to ensure the expeditious processing of manuscripts. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in the rejection of manuscripts or delays in the review process and publication. Send manuscripts for publication and related correspondence to: Dr. Carol A. Lefebvre, Editor, The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, School of Dentistry, AD-1112, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA 30912-1255. Telephone: (706) 721-4558. Facsimile: (706) 721-4571. E-mail: jpd@mcg.edu. Manuscript Preparation To submit a manuscript, please follow the instructions below. For additional information, go to Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com. •Submit 3 typed, double-spaced manuscripts (1 original and 2 copies) with 1-inch margins. Also submit a CD, IBM-compatible floppy disk, or zip disk with a label identifying the computer system and word processing program used. CD format is preferred. •Manuscripts should not exceed 10 to 12 pages (excluding references, legends, and tables). All pages must be numbered. The text must conform to acceptable English usage. •Use generic drug names (trade names may be listed in parentheses at point of first mention). •Use a generic term to describe a product, then provide the product trade name, manufacturer, city, and state/country in parentheses following the generic term. •Authors must use current dental nomenclature. Consult the 7th edition of the Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms for accepted terminology. (See Information for Readers in “A” pages to obtain a copy.) •Identify teeth by name (e.g., maxillary right central incisor) rather than by number. •The primary author must justify the number of authors if the list exceeds four. Title page •No abbreviations should be used in the title. The title should be as concise as possible and yet define the study's scope, content, and clinical significance. •Include each author's full name, title, academic degree(s), institutional affiliation(s), and location(s). •If the manuscript was presented before an organized group, specify the name of the organization, the location, and inclusive dates of the event at which the manuscript was presented. •List any grant or other financial support by citing the name of the supporting organization and/or the grant number. •List the mailing address, business and home telephone numbers, fax number, and e-mail address of the author who will receive correspondence and reprint requests. Abstract •A structured abstract is required for all research articles. It should include the following sections: (1) statement of problem, (2) purpose of study, (3) material and methods, (4) results, (5) conclusion, and (6) clinical implications. The abstract should be limited to 250 words and typed double-spaced on a separate page. It should contain no abbreviations. •Tip articles do not need abstracts. The abstract of a clinical report or a dental technique article should summarize the article and the procedure's advantages in one brief paragraph. Text—types of articles •Articles in the Journal can be classified as follows: clinical reports, research studies, technical procedures, literature reviews (overviews), articles on other professional subjects, and tips. All submissions are evaluated by peer review. •All research manuscripts must include a brief statement of the clinical significance of the material presented. •The clinical report (1) describes the author's methods for meeting a patient treatment challenge, (2) makes appropriate reference to other treatment methods considered and provides a rationale for the selection of the chosen method, and (3) includes a brief summary. It should be no longer than 4-5 pages and accompanied by no more than 8 quality descriptive illustrations. •The research report: (1) clearly states the problem and objective of the research in the form of a null hypothesis, (2) summarizes relevant literature in the introduction, (3) identifies the limitations of the study, (4) describes the research method so that it can be duplicated and judged for validity, (5) reports the results accurately and briefly, (6) provides a discussion of the findings, and (7) lists the conclusions that may be drawn from the research. •The technical procedure: (1) states the objective of the technique, (2) describes the procedures, (3) makes appropriate reference to alternate techniques, (4) discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the technique presented, and (5) is written in a step-by-step “cookbook” manner. •The literature review (overview) accurately records the sequence of development of a particular phase of dentistry. It is brief but complete and provides documentation by references. It is a critical review of the literature. •Articles on other professional subjects may address such topics as education, communication, ethics, technology, medicolegal problems, theoretical explanations, and analytic comparisons. Although the organizational pattern may vary, the presentation should be logical, effective, and appropriate for the Journal audience. •Tips from our readers are brief reports of helpful or time-saving procedures. They should be limited to 2 authors, no longer than 250 words, and accompanied by no more than 2 illustrations. References •References must be identified in the text by superscript Arabic numbers and numbered in the order that they are cited in the text. •All references, except those requiring discussion of new evidence-based information resulting from the study at hand, should be cited in the Introduction and/or Material and Methods section(s). •Manuscripts in preparation, personal communications, and other unpublished information are NOT cited in the reference list. A personal communication may be cited within the text in parentheses, and should include the name of the person contacted, his/her highest academic degree, whether the communication was oral or written, and the date of the communication. •Abstracts are considered unpublished observations and are not allowed as references. •Reference to foreign language publications should be kept to a minimum (no more than 3). They are permitted only when the original article has been translated into English. The English translation should be used and the original language noted in brackets. •The reference list should appear at the end of the article and be in numeric sequence. Only references cited in the text should appear in this list. The format should conform to that set forth in “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” (www.icmje.org). Journal titles should conform to the abbreviations in the Cumulative Index Medicus. •List up to six authors. If there are seven or more authors, add et al after the sixth author's name.EXAMPLES OF REFERENCES FORMAT: For journal articles: Jones ER, Smith IM, Doe JQ. Occlusion. J Prosthet Dent 1985;53:120-9. For books: Bolender CL, Carlsson G, Zarb GA, Hickey JC. Boucher's prosthodontic treatment for edentulous patients. 10th ed. St. Louis: CV Mosby; 1985. p. 312-23. Tables •Tables should be double spaced and include column heads, footnotes, and data. Any abbreviation used in a table should be explained in a footnote. •Tables should be numbered, using Roman numerals, according to their order of mention in the text. Each table must be submitted on a separate sheet of paper. Omit border/dividing lines and shading. •Each table should have a concise title that describes its content. Tables should be self-explanatory and supplement, NOT duplicate, the text or accompanying illustrations. •If a table or any data therein have been published previously, a footnote must give full credit to the original source (see Permissions). Illustrations •Submit 2 glossy, unmounted sets of illustrations (all black and white or, if color contributes to the value of the manuscript, 2 sets of color). They should be numbered in order of their mention in the text. All prints should have labels adhered to the back with the figure number and an arrow to indicate the top edge; do NOT write any author's name on the back. Typed labels are preferred; pencil or ink may smudge stacked illustrations, and pen or pencil pressure may cause writing to show through the emulsion. Submit glossy prints of all illustrations, including slides, original artwork, EMC strips, and graphs. •Typewritten or handwritten lettering on figures is unacceptable. All lettering should be done professionally, be visible against its background, and be of legible proportion should the illustration be reduced. If a key to an illustration requires artwork (screen lines, dots, unusual symbols), it should be incorporated into the drawing instead of included in the typed legend. •Photographs should have good black and white contrast or color balance. Reproductions can be no better in quality than the originals. Reproduction does not correct the exposure, sharpen the focus, or improve the contrast of the original print. Any special instructions about sizing, placement, or color should be clearly noted. Illustrations will not be returned unless specifically requested. Shaded or colored backgrounds should be eliminated from graphs. •All microscopic photographs must have a measurement bar and unit of measure on the print. •Color illustrations may be submitted when their use contributes significantly to the value of the manuscript. The Editor has final authority to determine whether color illustrations provide the most effective presentation. A maximum of 2 Journal pages of color, each page containing a maximum of 8 photographs and each photograph measuring 4 inches wide × 3 inches high, will be reproduced free of cost to the author(s) for all articles other than the clinical reports. Clinical reports are limited to 1 page of color (8 photographs). •Electronic illustration submission: Figures may be submitted in electronic format, but professional quality, glossy hard copy figures must accompany them. All electronic images should be at least 5 inches wide. They should be provided in EPS or TIFF format on CD, Zip disk, or floppy PC-formatted disk. Graphics software such as Photoshop or Illustrator, NOT presentation software such as PowerPoint, CorelDraw, or Harvard Graphics, should be used to create art. Color images should be CMYK and at least 300 DPI. Gray scale images should be at least 300 DPI. Combination gray scale and line art should be at least 1200 DPI. Line art (black and white or color) should be at least 1200 DPI. If the figures are to be reproduced in color, the hard copy prints must be in color. These prints will be used at press for color reproduction. •The Editor retains the right to limit the number of color illustrations. The cost of color illustrations that exceed the allowed number will be charged to the author. Because of the high cost of printing a color page, photographs are grouped to fit 8 to a page. Submitted glossy color prints must be of standard size, 4 × 6 inches or 5 × 7 inches. Mixed horizontal and vertical arrangement of illustrations makes it impossible to fit 8 photographs per page, and numerous parts per figure (Fig. 1, A, B, C, etc.) sometimes total more than the maximum 8 per page. The 8-photograph maximum per page is based on illustrations 4 inches wide × 3 inches high, placed in 2 columns for economy of space. Figure Legends •Figure legends must be on a separate sheet of paper and numbered to correspond with the figures. If an illustration is taken from previously published material, the legend must give full credit to the source (see Permissions). •Authors are obligated to disclose whether illustrations have been modified in any way. Permissions •Permissions must be obtained for direct quotations, tables, and illustrations that have appeared in copyrighted material. The author must provide a copy of written permission for their use from the copyright owner and original author along with complete information about the source. •When photographs of identifiable persons are used, said persons must sign a release consent. Review Process for Publication •Manuscripts are reviewed by the Editor, editorial staff, and one or more of the following: Associate Editor, Assistant Editors, consultants, and/or reviewers. If a conflict of opinion arises, an additional reviewer or special consultant will be asked to serve as an adjudicator. Qualified statisticians review all studies that draw conclusions from statistical evidence. •Articles accepted for publication are subject to editorial revision. The Publisher and Editor's office reserve the right to edit all manuscripts to fit the space available and to ensure conciseness, clarity, and style consistency. •Three guides to assist authors are available on the Journal Web site, www.Mosby.com/prosdent: “Guidelines for Preparing Articles for The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry,” “Guidelines for Reporting Statistical Results,” and “An Author's Guide to Controlling the Photograph.” Author's Identity with Commercial Products •Authors who submit manuscripts for possible publication may not directly or indirectly advertise equipment, instruments, or products with which they have personal identity. Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications therein are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Editor(s) or Publisher. The Editor(s) and Publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the Editor(s) nor the Publisher guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication; nor do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service. Authors must disclose any financial interest that they may have in products mentioned in their articles and any compensation that they will receive from a commercial company upon publication of an article. Copyright Transfer/IRB Approval/HIPAA Compliance Statement •In accordance with the Copyright Act of 1976, each author must complete and sign a separate copy of the Copyright Transfer/IRB Approval/HIPAA Compliance Statement appearing on the last page of this section. This page may be copied and completed, or the statement can be accessed as a PDF form on the Journal Web site (www.Mosby.com/prosdent). All statements should be mailed or faxed to the Editorial Office at the following address: Editorial Office, The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, 1120 15th St, AD-1112, Augusta, GA 30912-1255; fax: 706-721-4571. Offprints and Custom Reprints •The corresponding author of each article receives 25 free offprints, which are overrun pages prepared at the time of journal printing. They may contain the last page of the previous article or the first page of the following article. •Because of the extremely high cost of preparing color articles, author reprints for articles with color illustrations must be prepared as overprints (overrun pages). Order forms are sent to the corresponding author so that offprints can be ordered before the month of publication. •Custom reprints are prepared after publication, do not contain any pages from preceding or following articles, and must be ordered directly through the Publisher, Elsevier Inc., 11830 Westline Industrial Dr, St Louis, MO 63146-3318. Single reprints of an article must be obtained from the corresponding author.
